Sight Words
In first grade we put a strong focus on sight word recognition and spelling. Students need to be able to quickly recognize these words without taking time to sound them out or use other reading strategies. In addition to this, students need to be able to write each word from memory. Sight words are also the words students will see frequently in the leveled readers they will work with during classroom instruction. Learning sight words will help your child grow in both their reading and writing abilities, and they will be assessed on these words frequently in class.
Using the rainbow ring sight words sent home is a great way to practice with your child. To begin you can focus on three to five words and once your child has learned those you can add three to five more, and so on. You can also have your child practice writing these words or building the words with letter cards or magnetic letters. For more creative practice you could have your child draw the words in sand outside, paint the words, or build the words using play dough. If you need anymore suggestions please let your child’s teacher know and we will be happy to help!
Below, there are slideshows containing the words we will focus on this school year if you would like to use it as a way to practice with your child. The slideshows are in the order in which we will be teaching the sight words. Click the arrow in the top corner to go to the next word.
