Students will be continuing exploring the strategies of addition in order to build fluency. They will start using math mountains next week. This will help start to build their understanding of subtraction being the inverse of addition. We will relate equations to story problems and begin solving subtraction equations.
Reading: This coming week we will be moving along in our Daily 5 launch! As we continue to build stamina for reading to self and working on writing, as well as retelling stories, we will be teaching and reviewing best practices for reading to someone. Students will learn how reading partners help each other become better readers.
Writing: Students will begin the week by perfecting the sketch stage in the writing process. Students will learn about what to do when an idea they want to draw is difficult. Then students will move from using one page to write their stories to planning their thoughts across 3 pages. This will help them develop an understanding of beginning, middle & end. At the end of the week, students will learn more about using their sounds to spell.
Word Study: This week the students will study digraphs “wh”, “ch”, “sh”, “th” & “ck”. A consonant digraph is two consonants that come together to make one sound. The students use pictures to reference the digraphs the same way they do for all of the other letters in the alphabet. They recognize a whistle to represent “wh”, chin to represent “ch”, a ship represent “sh”, and a thumb to represent “th”

This week we will read four more Kevin Henkes books! We will start with Sheila Rae the Brave. Sheila Rae is very brave. She is not afraid of anything! She walks backwards and steps on the cracks in the sidewalk. Until one day when she gets lost! Sheila Rae’s sister Louise turns up to save the day. They realize that they are both brave!
We will read Chester’s Way. In this story Chester makes a very special friend. The book shows their friendship through the seasons. As a follow-up activity, the students will show themselves with their special friend and show an activity they enjoy sharing with them in each season.
Then we will read Wemberly Worried. Wemberly is a mouse that worried about everything! She especially worried about her first day of school. In the end, Wemberly made a new friend and learned that she didn’t really have a reason to worry. As a follow up activity, the students will write about a time that they felt worried.
We will read Owen. Owen had a special yellow blanket that he took everywhere! The students then will pick their own special item that they have at home and illustrate 3 different things they like to do with their item.
Then, we will read Chrysanthemum. Chrysanthemum always believed her name was beautiful and perfect until she goes to school and is teased. However, she learns that her name is unique and beautiful just like she is!
