Back to School Night
Please plan on attending our Back to School Night on Thursday, August 3rd We have lots of information to share with you specific to this year in First Grade. There are presentations at 5:00 and 6:00 in Mrs. Chavis’ Both sessions are the same. Plan to arrive early to find parking! Hope to see you there
On Monday, we will send home a paper copy of the newsletter. However to save paper, we will begin emailing the newsletter each Friday afternoon. Please make sure you have sent back the EMAIL sheet that was in the meet the teacher packet so you will receive the newsletter each week!! If you would like a paper copy, please let your child’s teacher know
Beginning on Monday, homework will be sent home in the Blue Folders. Homework is always due on Fridays. It is to be returned in the student’s blue folders. Students will be bringing home their blue folder each night. Please make sure that the folder comes back to school each day! The folder is also used to communicate with you, whether we have notes, updates, or important information from the administration or PTA.
On Fridays, we send home a Friday Folder that contains all the work students have completed for the week and sometimes other information from the school. Please empty the folder and review your child’s work with them. Return the folder on MONDAY!
Next week in math students will form an understanding that counting is the foundation for understanding place value and how numbers work. Students will discuss why it is important count. By the end of the unit students will be able to count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. Students will also be able to read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral. We will practice these skills by counting on, using number lines, hundreds boards & counting by 10’s.
·Reading: Next week we will start the Launch of Daily 5. Students will learn three ways to read a book, discuss why we read to self and have the chance to practice reading for self. Daily 5 routine. Next week we will begin Mclass reading assessments.
Writing: Next week we will start with a review of letter formation and sentence structure. We will introduce Daily Oral Language. DOL: A strategy for building student success in learning grammar, punctuation and spelling skills)
Word Study: Next week we will start with Unit 2 in Fundations. Your child is going to: Learn phonemic awareness skills and blend, read, and spell short vowel words with three sounds. Be on the look out for the letter going home on Monday in your child blue homework folder for more information about this unit and additional resources.
Ship Wreck Social Studies
Students will understand that rules are needed to promote fairness and resolve conflicts in the home, school and community. They will also understand that authority figures in the home, school, and community influence the well being of people.
We will use different types of literature such as The Little Red Hen, David Goes To School, and Officer Buckle & Gloria to reinforce these concepts.
